To solve the extinction issue the Forsaken can now pledge an oath (likely to the Horde) to serve in death however many times they die. Many of the issues that arrive in lore characters about the undead center around consent, or being raised against their will. With this change no longer are Forsaken raised unwillingly, it's an opt in service. It's not. It's just different. WC3 was telling a story, WoW is not really telling a story. In WC3, the whole Warcraft lore was a story that was being told, that changed with WoW, now the Warcraft lore is not really a story but rather a universe that people get to explore. I liked to imagine some Orc Mages were penitent Warlocks, but younger ones were likely just interested in magic and had plenty of opportunities to study Arcane in the modern Horde. Azeroth has some intense history and a really solid place in video game culture. The lore is vast and there's so much to learn. I know more than the average player, I'm sure but I definitely don't know that much. What's you're favorite piece of lore and why? Start with Lord of the Clans (pre-WC3, Thrall), Last Guardian (WC1, Medivh, Khadgar etc.) or Day of the Dragon (pre-WC3 Rhonin, dragons). Or if you are already familiar with Warcraft lore, you can more freely choose where to start, like Rise of the Horde (horde origins and struggle in Draenor). Start with whichever one interests you the most.

My main issue with Shadowlands as a whole was that it didn’t feel like Warcraft to me. If it weren’t for the handful of faction leaders/heroes that stick around in Oribos, it would feel like a different IP altogether. Give it a try and see for yourself, but I personally wouldn’t really recommend it.
